Roessler, 2004 Riesling, Wiley Vineyard ("Roessler" is pronounced "Wrestler")

Tasting Synopsis:

  1. Nose: Inviting florality. Each noseful provides a great, mouth-watering promise of things to come.
  2. Palate: The great thing about a well-made Riesling is its push-pull tension between fruit-and-flowers (which implies richness) and the crispness of its acidity. There is a reason some of the world's most expensive wines are Rieslings, and that they are as popular at the table as they are as cocktails.

The Wine
As with the Santa Barbara wine country, the Anderson Valley has an East-West exposure to the Pacific. A valley with this rather unique orientation benefits from a funnel affect, with cool ocean breezes that moderate the extremes, making Anderson Valley ideal for cool-weather grapes such as pinot, chardonnay, and riesling.

Some would argue that Riesling is at its best when grown in the cool environs of Germany's Mosel or Rhine. Others argue for the crisper examples of Austrian Rieslings, while yet others argue for their favorites from Alsace. But I'm going to pull the trump card here. I think once they taste this wine from the Westernmost part of Anderson Valley, they'll all be looking over their shoulders for this new player in town.
