Tasting Panel Comments:This wine is stingy with the aromas at first, but warms up nicely overtime and becomes, if not gregarious, at least open and friendly. Exactly what one would expect from this cool Santa Maria vineyard. Tart cherries dominate, with pleasant hints of soft oak spice. A hint of sweet farmland air?
Palate: Elegant and light, this is an acidic pinot begging for the nearest plate of lamb. Look for citric tartness, cherries, rose petals and warm earth.
Food Pairings: The tartness and earthiness in this wine suggests pairing with sweet/savory dishes of like character - break out the grilled or roasted meats served with a cherry-and-red-wine reduction!
Winemaker Ariki Hill worked under the tutelage of some of Central Coast's greatest pinot producers before launching his first California pinot in 2000 and then his Australian label in 2002. Riki knew pinot at an early age, growing up in the New Zealand pinot country. But his pinot career came about through a number of key encounters with wines that literally rocked his world, and launched a mid-life career change.
