Heron 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon, California Tasting Notes

  • Nose: Highly aromatic with red currants, ripe cherries, a dash of dried herbs.
  • Palate: Blends the complexity and intensity of a big Cabernet with softer, suppler tannins. Deep and lush. Poised between boldness and delicacy. You'll be amazed to see how this wine's relatively low alcohol (<14%) makes this wine so great with food - less assertive, more complimentary than may pricier wines.

Over the last decade, winemaker Laely Heron has developed a reputation for making fine wines at amazing prices. Her wines offer definite proof that one can still enjoy a nice wine every night and have that arm and leg handy for when you want to buy a few of those special occasion, collectible wines.

  • Food Pairings

  • Most Cabernets are paired with foods that match their big, bold, high alcohol, fruit-and-oak profiles (which means, not much more than a good steak, actually) But this affordable wine treads the difficult path between bold and delicate – a Baryshnikov of a wine – and are as comfortable performing athletic leaps next to deep winter stews, roast meats and braised dishes as they are performing a delicate Pas de Deux with lighter meals such as pork, roast turkey or chicken, pasta or fish and veggies on the grill.
  • Napa Valley Fruit, aged in French oak barrels, how Heron can produce a wine with these credentials and sell them for such reasonable rates is beyond me.
