The Wine
This wine is so dark and dense that it swallows light like a black hole. A nose of complex fruits including scents of dark plums, perhaps some blood oranges, and black currants all wrapped in pleasant notes of fresh peppercorns, smoked bacon fat, lavender, rose petal and baking chocolate. I could go on and on and on and...
So I will. The palate evolves over time, at first revealing raspberry with mint hint, then red plums with black pepper emerge, then cassis and tar and lavender and on and on as it opens up. This is a weighty wine, with a broad mid-palate, good tannins and enough acidity to lift the finish with memories of black cherry and sweet brown spices. An outstanding Syrah from the Central Coast’s epic 2005 vintage.
The Winery
Barrel 27 is a tale of two entrepreneurs - McPrice “Mac” Myers, and Russel From. This is their first reserve Syrah, a selection of the very best barrels from their Central Coast Syrah with some small syrah lots from Mac and some from Russell. I love these guys, not only for their wine but for the fact Russel himself delivered it to us when we were under a time crunch.
Mac started in wine during his early twenties when working at Trader Joe’s. He began sampling the wines from work and soon developed a taste for slightly more upscale wines during frequent tasting trips to the Central Coast wine country, where he began volunteering at a number of wineries. After learning the production process for a few years, Mac started making wine himself. It was about this time he met another fledgling winemaker, Central Coast native Russell From.
Russell got his start in wine while attending Cal Poly San Luis Obispo’s Agriculture program. With a very different career path in mind, Russell began working at wineries simply because they were hiring. But it wasn’t long before he got serious about it. Shortly thereafter he met Mac, and after several discussions, appropriate amounts of wine, and a punch-up or two, Barrel 27 was born under the slogan “Each bottle of this wine represents a dream realized by two friends”. And so it is.
Food Pairings
This is a great winter wine, well-suited to the deeper flavors of seasonal foods such as stew, cassoulet, Osso Buco, pot roast and roast anything with root vegetables.
